Tax relief for first-time home buyers in Greece applies to all European nationals, rules ECJ

"Exemption from the tax payable on the purchase of a first residential property only to persons residing in Greece is contrary to European Union principles."

This is how the European Court of Justice has ruled. Clearly, in this tax relief lies a strong incentive for all first time buyers in Greece, Greek and other EU nationals alike.

First-time home buyers in Greece are exempt from paying tax attached to property, provided they are permanently resident in Greece. Now the European Court of Justice has found there should be no such restriction. To comply with EU law, this exemption should apply to all EU nationals.
